Dear Scholar,
 

To promote Chinese Studies and to foster the cooperation between the Chinese and Western worlds of Chinese Studies, the World Association for Chinese Studies will hold the “9th World Conference of Chinese Studies” on August 8-10, 2025 at Berlin, Germany, and at Copenhagen, Denmark. We kindly invite you to participate with a paper on “___________________ ________________________________________”. See: http://china-studies.com. We also invite you to the pre-conference event on July 31 in Berlin: “International Conference on Sinophone Literature and Crossmedia Storytelling”.

 

1. Time

July 31, 2025: “International Conference on Sinophone Literature and Crossmedia Storytelling”, Leonardo Hotel Berlin Mitte. You can participate only in this event, only in the bigger conference on Aug 8-10 (starting in Leonardo Hotel Berlin Mitte and last day in Copenhagen) or in both events.

Aug 7-11, 2025 (arrival and conference registration Aug 7, presentations in Berlin Aug 8-9, travel to Copenhagen Aug 10, presentations in Copenhagen Aug 10, Closing Ceremony Aug 10 evening, discussion about possibilities of scholarly cooperation with European Sinologists (incl. Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy etc.) departure Aug 11, some scholar stay longer to discuss cooperation). We recommend arriving in Berlin on July 30 already and to participate in the 1-day pre-conference event: International Conference on Sinophone Literature and Crossmedia Storytelling, July 31, 2025 and then enjoy Berlin for 7 days or travel through Europe and be back in Berlin on Aug 8 to participate in the main conference.


2. Venue

Participants are free to book the hotel they like. We will probably use the conference rooms of the Hotel Leonardo Berlin Mitte, Bertolt-Brecht-Platz 4, 10117 Berlin, phone +49 30 3744 05000. Flights from Berlin to Copenhagen on Aug 10 (we recommend a morning flight) need to be booked by the participants themselves. In Copenhagen the conference rooms are in the hotel: Wakeup Copenhagen, Carsten Nieburhs Gade 11, Vesterro/Kongens Enghave, 1577 Kopenhagen, Hovedstaden, Denmark.

 

3. Topics (further topics welcome)

1 Traditional and Premodern Chinese Studies; 2 Modern and Contemporary Chinese Studies; 3 Chinese History, Philosophy, Politics, Literature, Linguistics, Culture, Education, Kaogu, Redology, Cao Xueqin Studies, Geography, Calligraphy, Ethnology, Music, Politics, Economics, Artificial Intelligence etc.; 4 New findings in Chinese Studies, 5 Comparison & integration of Guoxue and Non-Chinese Chinese Studies, 6 Different aspects of Chinese Studies, 7 Chinese literature in translation and international dissemination, 8 Research on Higher Education in China and abroad, 9 Reflexions on Chinese Literary History and on sinophone literature, 10 Related topics in any discipline somehow related to China (e.g. artificial intelligence in general incl. DeepSeek and ChatGPT [Special Focus]); 11 Young Scholars Session, 12 East West Media Design Comparison.


4. Types of Proposals

a. Individual Paper proposals

b. Organized Panels proposals: These proposal types should include: A panel title, a Chair, 3-6 Paper Presenters, and a Moderator/Discussant.

c. Roundtable Discussions; Branch Association proposals by various and different professional branch associations or partner associations of WACS.

 

5. Conference Languages

Conference language is English, discussions can be in Chinese. Simultaneous translation cannot be guaranteed.

 

6. Contribution requirements

a. Please register now or until May 31, 2025 here with a paper title and a 150 words abstract.

b. You can participate with or without giving an oral presentation. In case you want to give a presentation, please submit an abstract together with your registration and in case of acceptance a full paper until June 15, 2025.

c. The abstracts received will be double blind peer reviewed and all applicants will be notified. Please wait for the confirmation before submitting your full paper, booking hotels/flights or paying any conference fee. Of course, if you know that you will participate also in case your proposal could not be admitted, you can book before receiving the decision.

d. In case your abstract will have been accepted, please send a draft of the full paper (6,000 words in English or 12,000 characters in Chinese) until June 15, 2025 by email to the organizing committee (wacs@china-studies.com - no extension possible, papers not submitted after June 15 will be considered rejected).

e. If you want to participate in the conference, please register online. The conference papers will be edited and published in a conference volume, and a selection of the Chinese papers will be published in journals too, e.g. in European Journal of Sinology, the European Journal of Chinese Studies or 汉学.

 

7. Conference and Accommodation Fees

a. The conference fee is 190 € (90€ for online participants) and includes catering. Please understand that all conference fees need to be paid at least until June 20, 2025. If you are a keynote speaker, a lifetime patron member or a VIP (e.g. a participant from a hosting university), please check the VIP box or contact the conference committee to waive all fees.

b. Please arrange international travel to Berlin, Copenhagen and back by yourself.

c. Accommodation, also for accompanying family members, need to be booked and paid by yourself. We recommend to book the conference hotels in Berlin and Copenhagen at conference discount rates. Since the rooms are limited, the discount rates are only available until the rooms are all booked. We recommend to reserve before May 31, 2025. Of course you are free to book a different hotel.

d. The conference fee of 190 Euros (including catering and bus costs) is non-refundable and needs to be paid upon registration or until June 20, 2025 the latest by international bank transfer to the bank account “World Association of Chinese Studies e.V.”, IBAN DE26430601290303952500SWIFT GENODEM1BOCBank: Volksbank Bochum-Witten, Universitaetsstr. 70, 44789 Bochum, Germany (for payments from outside Europe, 15 € fee have to be added to the amount). There is no other way of payment, and cash cannot be accepted. If you have difficulties making the bank payment, please contact other participants to make a joint payment (saves also on the 15 € fee, which the bank charges one time for each payment, regardless for how many participants the payment is).

8. Registration

Please register online until May 31, 2025 (or as soon as possible), together with a title of your paper, a 150-word abstract. After a quality assurance process, the conference program and the list of participants will be finalized. Please submit the payment until June 20, 2025 and the paper for the conference booklet until June 30, 2025.
