Dean's Message

“After a decade of hard work, our disciples are now all around the world.” In this harvest season, the 10th Anniversary of the School of Management and Engineering of Nanjing University will be celebrated. 10 years ago, the famous Management Expert Prof. Sheng Zhaohan, who established our School, lead us, starting from scratch, hard, perseveringly and steady to work. Today, our school already has Primary Discipline Doctoral Programs and Post-doctoral Research Programs for Management Science and Engineering, Information Engineering Doctoral Programs, Primary Disciplines Master’s Programs for Management Science and Engineering, Control and System Engineering, Optical Engineering, as well as non-academic Master’s programs for Project Management, Industrial Engineering, Control Engineering and Optical Engineering. There are 4 Bachelor Degrees for Automation, Industrial Engineering, Financial Engineering and Information Engineering. Now we have 2000 students in total at our school, including undergraduate, graduate (including non-academic) and doctoral candidate.
In these years, under the lead of Prof. Sheng, we hold onto the school motto “the way of study needs a good faith, only in this way, we can service well for the most people”, and perseveringly establish an interdisciplinary research and education team that inosculate Arts, science, engineering and management. The quantity of teachers rose from 5 to 60. “Being the highest and lowest” is our goal and pursuance. “Being highest” means we will do our best to be in the same level with the first-class teams of China and abroad. Now we have already published hundreds of papers in the first-class core journals of China and abroad, directed and participated in the 6 programs of “973”,”863” and the national key programs (projects and sub items), taken on the Research Projects supported by the State Key Program of National Natural Science of China in four consecutive years. We undertook 56 projects supported by the state, and 63 projects supported by Jiangsu Province. Each teacher got 2.5 projects. We also got the first prize of advanced technology Award supported by the Ministry of Education, the first prize of Philosophy and Social Sciences award supported by Jiangsu Province, first prize of defense technology award supported by state and so on. “Being lowest” means we will do our best to service the development of society. In these 10 years, our school has already trained a lot of high-level talents, and also proactively impels the scientific and technical payoffs to transfer to the actual productivity. Through the corporation between Suzhou-Nantong Bridge, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, stock supervisory committee, Ministry of Railways, ICBC, Shanghai Stock Exchange, Yangzi Petrochemical company Ltd., Sinopec Qilu Company Ltd., Jiangsu Guoxin Investment group limited, China Mobile Jiangsu, HP, Agilent Technologies, Siemens, Rockwell Automation and such major enterprises, we carry out the scientific research, develop the technology, and obtain good’ economy and social benefit.
In these 10 years, every achievement of our school was only possible due to the great support of the university and each department, due to the enthusiastic help of the academia colleagues from China and abroad, and due to the caring and support of the government and the whole society. We are very aware that the 10 years is only a beginning for the development of our school. To achieve and realize our “Highest and Lowest”, we need to be geared to international standards in the science research and the mode of education, need to open our mind in talents import and the construction of academic echelon, and also need to pay more attention to the further reform of school structure and emphasizing the school culture construction.
With the important commission, we eagerly expect the support of colleagues from China and abroad, expect the help of every friend who is keen to get to know our school. “Plant lots of green trees to enjoy the cool, go to the high tower to look far”. We are looking forward to sharing the success and happiness of our school with you.
