A Global History of Sinology is the first attempt to tell the story of Chinese studies as a truly global enterprise. It spans from the earliest travellers’ reports and the Jesuit accommodation of Matteo Ricci, through the great national schools of European sinology, to today’s digital humanities — following how the world has studied China across four centuries.
Alongside the established Western traditions, the volume gives voice to sinology as it has developed across Africa, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America and the post-Soviet world — many of these national histories appearing here for the first time.
